To the Editor:
I have been part of the piping community for 35 years. I am a solo competitor and aspire to play with the Scotia Highlanders, but many of my piping friends know this year my competitive season and playing has been slowed by my battle with cancer. While all of us within the piping community share a love for the music and this magnificent instrument, the lifelong friendships and bonds among pipers are truly extraordinary and are what makes our international community so special. Recently, I was honored and humbled to be the beneficiary of a piping concert at the Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady, NY, to raise awareness and funding to fight cancer. Organized by Dr. Jim Feeney and his amazing children, pipers from all over the northeast volunteered their time and talent for this amazing event. I am so grateful to the many bands and soloists who performed – it was a night I’ll never forget. You are too numerous to individually name but know who you are! Through these efforts, proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, which provides free housing for cancer patients while receiving treatments at major hospital centers away from home. Special thanks to Dr. Jim Feeney, Joe McGonigal, Dan Cole, and Donald Lindsay for their support and house calls to keep me piping during my recent months of chemotherapy. Bagpipers and drummers are really the most generous, caring, and spirited people I have been privileged to know.
